Citrus Courtyard

Citrus Courtyard is located in the northeast corner of the Main Quad between the Inner and Outer Quads. A short walk from Avocado Courtyard, it is one of several distinct gardens on land originally intended for future building expansion.

The site has evolved from a two-lane road to an octagonal garden room scented by citrus and star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).

The citrus collection was first proposed in 1915 by Golden Gate Park Superintendent John McLaren, and today it includes Sweet Orange, Mandarin Orange, Lime, Grapefruit, Rangpur Lime, Buddha's Hand Citron and Kumquat. Blooms come in waves in spring and summer, from Magnolia (Magnolia soulangiana and others) to Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata "Kwanzan") to India Hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica) to lantana (Lantana montevidensis cultivars).
