Problems and Solutions
This section covers a variety of the challenges Grounds Service
faces daily. For example, insects can be both destructive and helpful
to our natural environment. The links Gallery
of Pests and Gallery of Beneficials
provide an exploration of the insect world and how it impacts the
fauna and flora of the Stanford community. Other links describe
some of the latest techniques for pest management.

Stanford University's I.P.M. Policy Statement: Stanford
University Facilities Grounds Services department will conduct it's
pest control operations by following an integrated pest management
(I.P.M.) approach to pest problems. The pest control operation will
use chemicals as a last resort to pest problems. Every effort in
finding the least toxic methods of pest control will be made in
finding a way to provide suppression or long-term control of the
pest with the least amount of impact to the environment, non-target
organisms and to human health. Grounds Services, in an effort to
be a role model in developing new and innovative less toxic ways
in handling pest problems, has made a commitment to train and educate
staff members about the department's I.P.M. approach to pest problems.
